The novel tells the story of characters from the late 19th century who are looking for a purpose in their lives. The hero of the book is Dr. Zelig Baumann, a genius psychiatrist who is unaware of his own disordered mental state, manages to organize the first Zionist Congress in Basel in 1897, but does so for the “wrong” motives. The dedicated work of the founding fathers, the ethos, and the righteousness of the way is converted into an alternative story, completely different, which places the weaknesses of the individual at the center.
